Options high school students participating in the Blended Learning program learned about native and non-native plants growing in the Options school forest. Students were able to identify goldenrod wildflowers as native pollinator plants that attract many species of bees in the fall, as well as the native Virginia creeper - a vine that can climb up to 40 feet high. Also found in the forest are invasive, non-native plants, such as garlic mustard, creeping Charlie, and chicory - a coffee substitute dating back to the Civil War that is still used today in some areas such as New Orleans. Students had to duck through the understory to go deep into the school forest. On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, Options celebrated the graduating class of 2024 at our annual graduation ceremony. The Options staff served 37 seniors during this school year.
This year four of our seniors chose to graduate early. That choice provided an opportunity for one student to join the nursing program at Gateway Technical College, which requires enrollees to have graduated from high school. The remaining early graduates chose to begin their careers.
Other seniors selected different pathways to complete their high school graduation requirements. We had five individuals who went to a University Campus for courses. These individuals earned a total of 110 credits towards their bachelors degrees while still in high school.
We also had eight seniors who attended a technical college. These seniors came away with 346 credits to support their future careers. Those credits included three students who earned a technical college certificate and all eight students who completed their technical diploma. This included nursing assistant, welding, horticulture, nail tech, EMT, and cosmetology. With these credits, our seniors are well on their way to completing an Associate Degree.
We are here to celebrate all of our graduating seniors. No matter where your life path takes you whether it’s a new career, technical college, or university or boot camp, please know that we at Options Virtual Charter School are proud to have been a part of your last year in high school. We enjoyed working with you and expect great things for your future.
Congratulations class of 2024! We are so proud of you and wish you the best of luck!
