Options High School “Forces of Nature” class has been working on weeding out the future Options Forest. Students cut down and removing invasive buckthorn saplings on a warm, sunny November day. One of our students who had a recent injury could not work in the forest but was still able to participate by making grapevine wreaths while the other students worked to remove buckthorn. Removing grape vines and buckthorn saplings are beneficial forest management practices that the students have been learning about in the Forces of Nature class.
Forces of Nature is a for-credit class that students take on Blended Thursday. The goal of the class is to work on improving the health of our Options school forest. This trimester, students have been working to plant native plants and remove invasive plant species. Another important goal in this class is learning to identify desirable native plants versus invasive, problematic plants.
